Moral hierarchy keeps oppressive structures standing strong.

Dr. Melanie Joy describes moral hierarchy as being the drive or ideal that stimulates the oppressor by saying, “I am morally superior.” In effect, this ideal gives a false sense of dominance that excuses troubling behavior. We can see examples of this ranging from Manifest Destiny to Christian Missionary work. By claiming that Europeans were destined by God to “discover” North America, it led to generations of monstrosities.

The Relational Phenomenon, created during SWARM’s 2020 residency, is about the psychology of oppression. The backbone of our American society functions off of the backs of black and brown people. Wool pulls snuggly over the eyes of mainstream culture and the abundant white American population. The white men who invaded, ravaged and pillaged the beautiful American landscape and its people are the ones who tell us about our history. Reparations are the only way to account for the damage done across several generations. That is why 25% of all profits will benefit The Aura House, a black-owned holistic mental health collective uplifting black and brown women.

This collection was drawn with Faber & Castell brush pens on bristol paper, then shaded with Daler Rowney graphite pencils. All pieces are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
